ÇOCUKLARDA BİLİŞSEL GELİŞİM
Bilişsel gelişim; kişinin etkin düşünme biçimleri geliştirmesi, edindiği bilgilerin kodlanması, sıralanması, işlenmesi ve depolanması kapasitesinin artışını ifade eder
Çocuklarda bilişsel gelişim evreleri dört ana başlık altında incelenebilir: Duyusal motor dönem, işlem öncesi dönem, somut işlemler dönemi ve soyut işlemler dönemi.
1. Duyusal motor dönem:
O-2 yaş aralığında bulunan bebekler, dünyayı duyu organları ile anlamaya ve motor hareketleriyle keşfetmeye çalışır. Yani, dünyaya yeni gelen bebek dokunarak, duyarak, tadarak, görerek ve koklayarak dünyayı anlamaya, dünyadaki cisimleri anlamlandırmaya çalışır. Bir bebeğin sürekli cisimleri ağzına götürmesi, ses çıkaran oyuncaklara ilgi göstermesi, emme, itme, kavrama, tutma gibi deneme yanılma yolu ile sergilenen hareketler zihinsel gelişimin ilk basamağı olarak düşünülebilir. Bu dönemin sonunda bebeklerde nesne sürekliliği gelişir. Nesne sürekliliği, nesneleri görmediğimizde bile var olduklarını anlayabilmeyi ifade eder. Mesela yeni doğan bebekler, annelerini görmedikleri zaman annelerinin başka bir yerde de olsa var olduğunu anlayamazken bu dönemin sonunda anneleri yanlarında değilken bile varlıklarını anlayabilirler.
2. İşlem öncesi dönem:
2-7 yaş aralığında bulunan çocuklar, dünyayı duyuları ve hareketleri ile keşfetmenin ötesine geçmiştir. Bu dönemde sözcükler ve çizimler de çocuğun dünyayı anlayıp ifade etmesine katkı sağlar. Bu dönemin başında dil gelişimi görülür, sözcükler ve nesneler arasında bağlantı kurulur. Çocuklar basit düzeyde sınıflandırma yapabilir. Mesela, cisimleri renklerine ya da şekillerine göre ayırabilir. Çocuklar bu dönemde zihinsel olarak büyük bir gelişim gösterseler de kısıtlı yönleri de bulunur. Bu dönemde çocuklar “benmerkezci” özellik gösterirler. Yani, çocuklar kendi bakış açıları ile başkalarının bakış açısı arasındaki farkı anlayamazlar. Canı parka gitmek isteyen çocuk, herkesin parka gitmek istediğini düşünebilir; bir yemeği sevmeyen çocuk herkesin o yemeği sevmediğini düşünebilir. Bu dönemde görülen bir diğer zihinsel kısıtlılık ise “canlılık” kavramıdır. Çocuklar, bu dönemde cansız nesnelerin canlanabileceğine ya da zaten canlı olduklarına inanabilir. Örneğin, oyuncak bebeğin onun canını yaktığına ya da bir bulutun onu koruduğuna inanması bu dönemde görülebilir. Bu dönemin sonlarına doğru çocuklar soru sormayı artırabilir. “Bu ne, neden bu böyle?” şeklinde sorular sorarak zihinlerinde bir mantık haritası oluşturmaya çalışırlar; fakat yine de zihinleri karmaşık olayları anlamlandırabilecek olgunluğa erişmemiştir. Örneğin, bir çocuk iki bardağa eşit su konulduğunda her iki bardaktaki suyun eşit miktarda olduğunu söylerken o bardaklardan birindeki suyun ince uzun bir bardağa konulduğu durumda daha çok miktarda su bulunduğunu söyleyecektir.
3. Somut İşlemler Dönemi:
7-11 yaş aralığında bulunan çocuklar, bu zamana kadar duyularıyla, hareketleriyle, kelimelerle somut beceriler kazanmıştır ve bu dönemde de bu somut becerilerin kullanımı öne çıkar. Çocuklar bu dönemde somut ögelerden yola çıkarak mantıksal çıkarımlar yapabilir. Mesela, işlem öncesi dönemde su miktarları eşit olmasına rağmen ince uzun bardaktaki suyun daha çok miktarda olduğunu düşünen çocuklar, bu dönemde suyun miktarı ve bardağın şeklinden yola çıkarak mantıksal düşünmeyi gerçekleştirir ve su miktarının aynı olduğunu söyleyebilir. Fakat soyut kavramları, cümleleri, sözleri, deyimleri anlamada zorluk yaşayabilirler.
4. Soyut İşlemler Dönemi:
11 yaş sonrası çocuklar, somut kavramların ötesinde soyut kavramaları da anlamlandırmaya başlarlar. Problem çözme, akıl yürütme ve muhakeme becerileri gelişmiştir. Somut olarak var olmayan olayları anlamlandırabilir, çözebilir, neden sonuçları hakkında fikir yürütebilir ve tek probleme farklı bakış açıları ile yaklaşabilir, farklı çözümler üretebilirler.
Çocuklarda zihinsel gelişim evreleri her çocuğa ve yaşam biçimine göre değişkenlik gösterebilir. Ayrıca, yaş sınırları da kesin bir gösterge olarak düşünülmemelidir. Bazı çocuklar bir üst gelişim evresine daha erken yaşta geçebilirken bazı çocuklar daha yavaş bir şekilde ilerliyor olabilir. Önemli olan, çocukların minyatür yetişkinler gibi düşünülmemesi gerektiği ve kendilerine has zihinsel gelişim evreleri olduğunu bilmektir.
