Damgalama
Damgalama, bir kişi veya grubu hedef alan aşağılayıcı, bireyi değersiz ve kimi zaman insandışı hissettiren etiketlemelerdir
Bu etiketlemeler bireylere toplumun normallerinden farklı olduğu gerekçesiyle önyargı ile yaklaşılmasına ve bireylerin ayrımcılığa uğramasına maruz bırakır. Kişi toplum tarafından dışlanır ve ötekileştirilir. Tarihe bakıldığında eski çağlardan beri ahlaki sorunların, suçluların, hastaların ve kölelerin toplum tarafından farklı şekillerde damgalanmış olduğu bilinmektedir.
Antik Yunan’da psikolojik rahatsızlıkları olanların Tanrı’nın gazabına uğramış olduğuna veya kötü ruhlar tarafından cezalandırıldıklarına inanılmıştır.
Günümüzde de psikolojik rahatsızlıkların damgalamaya maruz kalması sıklıkla karşılaşılan bir durumdur.
Yanlış inanışlar ve korku psikolojik rahatsızlıkların neden oluştuğunun, nasıl göründüğünün ve temelde ne olduğunun toplum tarafından anlaşılmasını zorlaştırmaktadır. Psikolojik sorun sanki kişinin eksikliğinden kaynaklanıyormuş gibi algılanmaktadır. Toplum tarafından ne yapacağı belirli olmayan ve tehlikeli olarak atfedilen kişiler kategorileştirilmekte ve bu kategoriler özelinde yapılan damgalamalara yönelik davranışlar sergilenmektedir.
Damgalanan kişi, sosyal çevresi tarafından dışlanmakta, çoğu zaman alay konusu olmaktadır. Toplum tarafından reddedilen kişi itibarını kaybederek iş yaşamında da işten çıkarılma, yeni bir iş bulamama gibi sorunlar yaşayabilmektedir. Damgalama, kişinin uyum sağlamasını zorlaştıran ve yaşam kalitesini oldukça düşüren bir kavramdır.
Birincil damgalama, bireye yönelik doğrudan bir damgalama türüdür. Hissedilen ve içsel damgalama türlerini içerir. Hissedilen damgalama, bireyin bu etiketlere gösterdiği duyguları saklamaya çalışma, kaçınma davranışı gibi davranış örüntülerini kapsamaktadır. İçsel damgalama ise kişinin çevresinden gelen tepkileri içselleştirmesiyle duygu ve düşüncelerin etkilenmesi ve damgalamanın kabullenilmesidir.
Bireyin dışarıdan gelen damgalama ile mücadele edebilme yetisine zarar verir. İkincil damgalama ise kişi ile birlikte ailesinin, arkadaşlarının da damgalamadan etkilendiği bir süreçtir.
Kişinin toplum tarafından damgalanacağına dair endişesi psikolojik destek alma davranışını da etkiliyebilmektedir.
Birey hem çevresinden destek görememekte hem de profesyonel bir yardımdan da mahrum kalmaktadır. Bununla birlikte kişi psikolojik rahatsızlığını çevresinden gizlemeye çalışabilmektedir. Kişinin ve yakın çevresinin rahatsızlık hakkında bilgi edinmesi ve süreçte aktif rol oynayabilmesi damgalama ve damgalamadan doğabilecek sorunlarla mücadeleyi kolaylaştırabilmektedir. Psikolojik rahatsızlıkları bulunan kişilerin topluma kazandırılması önem arz etmektedir. Bu yüzden damgalama ile mücadele etmek toplumsal bir sorumluluktur. Yanlış inançların, önyargıların değiştirilmesine yönelik bilgilendirilme çalışmaları ve damgalamaya yönelik mücadele programları faydalı olabilmektedir. Psikolojik rahatsızlıklar hakkında bilgilenme, damgalamayı azaltmakta etkilidir. Medyanın da damgalama üzerinde yüksek derecede negatif ve pozitif rolü vardır. Medyada işlenen konularda yanlış bilgilerin önüne geçilmesi ve damgalama karşıtı tutum sergilenmesine odaklanılması gerekmektedir.
