Bazı kişiler ebeveyn figürü olarak gördüğü bireylere yönelik çok yoğun bir duygusal bağlılık ve yakınlık hissetmektedir.
Yakınlık o kadar aşırıdır ki kişinin kimliğinin nerede bittiğini ve bağlı olunan kişinin kimliğinin nerede başladığını ayırt etmek fazlasıyla zorlaşmıştır. Yakın hissedilen kişiye yapışma hali bulunmaktadır. Kişi ebeveyn figürünün düşüncelerini, eylemlerini içselleştirir, bu düşüncelere uymayan kendi düşüncelerini ise yokmuş gibi baskılar. Kişisel kararlar almaktan kaçınırlar. Kişi ebeveyn figürü ile aralarında bir sınır oluşturmanın doğru olmayacağı inancındadır. Bu yüzden ondan hiçbir şey saklamaz, karşı tarafın da bunu yapmasını bekler. Yapışılan kişiden ayrılma düşüncesi suçluluk duymaya neden olur.
Bu kişiler için sen ve ben yoktur. Yapıştığı başkaları ile tek bir kişiymiş gibi hareket ederler.
Yapışılan kişinin aklını okuyabildiklerine ve konuşmadan anlaşabildiklerine inanırlar. Onun davranışlarını taklit ederler, yapışılan kişi yokken kendi istekleri doğrultusunda aktiviteler yapıyor olmaktan yoğun sıkıntı duyarlar. Kendi sorunlarından çok diğerinin sorunları ile ilgilenirler. Görüşleri, ilgi ve beğenileri ebeveyn figürünün doğruları etrafında şekillenir.
İç içe geçilen ebeveyn figürü çoğu zaman anne veya babadır. Büyüdükçe gelişen sosyal ilişkilerde kişi yapışmak için üzerinde otorite kurabilecek güçlü sevgili veya yakın arkadaş aramaya başlar. Böylece onun düşüncelerini benimseyebilir, koruması altına girebilirler. Bu kişilerin karizmatik liderlerle de bağ kurması olasıdır.
Yapışık olma hali kişilerin kendilerine ait bir kimlik geliştirmesine engel olmaktadır. Kişinin başkası yönelimli olması ve iç içelik kendi benliğinin gelişmesine fırsat vermemiştir. Bu kişiler, bir figür ile bağlantıları olmazsa varlıklarının bir anlamı olmadığını düşünürler. Kendi yetenekleri ve istediklerini gerçekleştiremedikleri bir boşluk duygusu yaşarlar.
Ebeveynlerin baskıcı ve otoriter olması, çocuğun duygu ve düşünceleri için suçluluk duymasına neden olacak engellemelerle karşılaşması, kendi isteklerini gerçekleştirmesine izin verilmemesi kişinin kendi varlığını sürdürmesi için başkaları ile bütünleşmek durumunda kalmasına neden olabilmektedir.
Terapide ebeveyn figürünün benliğinden ayrılma üzerine çalışılır. Sonraki aşama ise kişinin kendi benliğini geliştirmesine odaklanmaktır. Kişinin yeteneklerini, ilgi alanlarını ve kararlarını keşfetmesine olanak sağlanır. Amaç mevcut benliğe tamamen zıt bir benlik oluşturmak değildir. Ebeveyn figürünün benliği ile kendi benliği arasındaki benzerlikler ve farklılıklar tespit edilir. İç içe geçmiş bir bağ kurmaktan korkan kişilerin ne çok yapışık ne de tamamen kaçınan sağlıklı yakınlık kurabilmesine yönelik çalışmalar yapılır.
