Halk arasında karabasan olarak da bilinen uyku felci, kişinin hemen uyandıktan sonra ya da uykuya dalmadan hemen önce yaşadığı konuşamama ve hareket edememe hali olarak tanımlanabilir.
Yapılan çalışmalar, kişilerin hayatlarında en az bir kez uyku felci yaşadığını göstermektedir. Kişilerin korku ve panik yaşamasına neden olan, karabasan olarak bilinmesiyle kişinin zihninde olumsuz düşünceler oluşturan uyku felcinin aslında kişiyi koruma gibi bir görevi bulunmaktadır.
Peki neden uyku felci yaşıyoruz?
Gece boyu birçok rüya görmekteyiz. Bu rüyalar bazen bir savaşta olduğumuz bazen de oradan oraya koştuğumuz rüyalar olabilir. İşte uyku felci, aslında rüyadayken yaptığımız hareketleri uyurken gerçekte de yapmayı engellemek için vücudumuzun gösterdiği bir savunma mekanizmasıdır. Uyku sırasında beynimiz bazen uyanır fakat kaslar aktifleşmez. Kaslar, felç durumunda kalarak vücudu korumaya devam eder. Yani aslında uyku felci yaşayarak hem uykumuzun kalitesi korunmuş olur hem de kendimize istemsiz olarak zarar vermemiz engellenir.
Beyni uyanıkken kasları uyanamayan kişilerde bu durum korku ve paniğe neden olabilir. Kişi, hareket edemez, konuşamaz, yerinden kalkamaz. Sanki üstünde bir ağırlık hissederek çaresiz olduğunu düşünebilir. Bazı durumlarda dokunsal, işitsel ve görsel halüsinasyonlar yaşanabilir. Örneğin kişi kendisine birisinin dokunduğunu hissedebilir, birisinin boğazını sıktığını düşünebilir ya da fısıltı gibi değişik sesler duyabilir. Uyku felci, genellikle birkaç saniye veya birkaç dakika sürebilir.
Karabasan olarak bilinen uyku felcini yaşayan kişiler, sıkışma hissi ile birlikte yoğun kaygı, korku ve endişeye kapılabilirler.
O andan çıkamama düşüncesi, bir daha hareket edemeyeceği düşüncesi ya da birilerinin ona zarar vermeye çalışma düşüncesi kişide kaygı yaratabilir ya da kişiler o an öleceği düşüncesi ile ölüm korkusu yaşayabilir. İlerleyen süreçlerde kişiler karabasan korkusu ile uyumak istemeyebilir, uykuya geçiş aşamasında yoğun endişe duyarak tedirgin hissedebilirler.
Yapılan çalışmalar, uyku felcini artıran bazı faktörler olduğunu ortaya koymuştur:
• Düzensiz uyku saatleri, çok fazla uyumak ya da çok az uyumak
• Depresyon, anksiyete, panik bozukluk gibi psikolojik rahatsızlıklara sahip olmak
• Ani bir yaşam olayı (yakın kaybı, şehir değişikliği vs.)
• Sürekli stresli bir ruh halinde bulunmak
Düzensiz uyku, stres gibi etmenler uyku felcinin yaşanmasında büyük önem taşıyan faktörler olduğundan vardiyalı çalışıp uyku düzenleri sabit olmayan kişilerde, stresli çalışma ortamlarında çalışan ve depresyon yaşayan kişilerde daha fazla yaşanabilir.
Uyku felci yaşayan kişilerin öncelikle tıbbi olarak uyku süreçleri, uyku dalgaları incelenir ve ilaç desteği verilebilir. Ayrıca, terapi ile kişinin yaşamındaki stres faktörleri, kişiler arası çatışmalar çözümlenerek, uykuya geçiş aşamasında gevşeme egzersizleri ile geçişi kolaylaştırılarak kişinin hayat kalitesi yükseltilmeye çalışılır.
