Çocukların uykuya dalma sırasında ihtiyaç duydukları, hayatlarının belli bir döneminde çok önemli hale gelen, rahatlamak istediklerinde yanında bulundurdukları ve her yere götürdükleri genelde yumuşak ve pürüzsüz malzemeden yapılmış oyuncak, battaniye ya da tülbent gibi nesneleri vardır.
Bu nesneler geçiş nesnesi olarak adlandırılır. Geçiş nesnelerinin çocuklar için anlamı bir oyuncak ya da battaniye olmaktan fazlasıdır. Zamanla mutluluk veren bu nesne önemini yitirerek herhangi bir nesne haline dönüşecektir.
Çocuğun geçiş nesnesine ihtiyaç duymasında anneden ayrışma süreci rol alır. Anne tüm ihtiyaçlarını karşılayandır. Her ağladığında ya da acıktığında kendine doyum sağlayan memeyi bebek kontrol edebildiği bir nesne olarak algılar. Ancak zamanla annesinden fiziksel ve psikolojik olarak ayrılan ve bireyleşen çocuk nesnenin kendine ait olmadığı ile yüzleşir. Bu yüzleşme sırasında yaşadığı kaygı ve korkuyla baş edebilmek için yumuşak anneyi ve besleyen memeyi anımsatacak bir nesne seçer. Geçiş nesnesi ile rahatlayan sakinleşen çocuk duygularını dengeleyebilir. Çocuk sevgisini, nefretini ya da saldırganlığını geçiş nesnesine yönlendirir. Geçiş nesnesi ile çocuk kendini güvende hissedebilir. Geçiş nesnesi çocuk için oyun alanı yaratır.
Çocuğun nesne ilişkileri gelişiminde, duygu düzenlemesinde ve güvenli hissetmesinde önemli etkilere sahip bu nesneye karşı ailelerin tutumu önemlidir.
Geçiş nesnesinin yıkanmaması, onarılmaması ve temizlenmemesi gerekir. Nesneye bu işlemlerin yapılması çocukta hayal kırıklığına neden olabilir. Çocuk için bu özel nesnenin üzerindeki kiri, kokusu ya da yırtığı rahatlatıcıdır ve değerlidir.
Çocuk nesneyi bu şekilde kabul etmiştir. Çocuk nesneyi ailenin kusur olarak görebileceği şeylerle sever. Ailenin geçiş nesnesini küçümsememesi ve fazla bağlandığı düşünülerek elinden alınmaması gerekir. Ailenin çocuk için rahatlatıcı olan bu nesnenin önemini fark etmesi gerekir. Çocuk nesne üzerinde hakkı olduğunu düşünür ve ailenin bu hakka saygı duyması gerekir.
